Triathlon Alberta Membership Requirement

All participants must be current members of Triathlon Alberta (or their provincial governing body) to comply with insurance regulations.
Membership comes in two forms:

  1. Annual Membership — purchased online

We will be cross-referencing all submitted membership numbers.
If an entered number is invalid, you must either:

COURSE DETAILS

THE SWIM

Standard  = 1.5km          |          Sprint Triathlon = 750m         |          Tri it = 300m

A 1 (Sprint) or 2 (Standard) triangular lap (clockwise) swim course will be in the warm, and comfortable setting of Lake Chaparral.  The swim caps (provided in race package) must be worn throughout the entire swim course to ensure safety of all athletes during this time. YOU MUST START IN THE HEAT DESIGNATED TO YOU (YOU WILL BE DiSQUALIFIED IF YOU START IN THE WRONG HEAT). The course will be patrolled by the Lake Chaparral motorized boat, as well as lifeguard volunteers in rowboats. Athletes are asked that if they are feeling any trouble or difficulty during the swim portion to raise their hand and a volunteer medical staff will be there to assist you within seconds.

Exit transition Westbound on Chaparral Drive. Follow Chaparral Dr SE around to 194th Ave. Turn Left (East) on 194th and follow to the bottom of the hill next to Chaparral Valley.  Continue east and then turn right into the new community of Wolf Willow.  Follow the loop through the community and return the way you came – up that nice hill!
Turn Right on Chaparral Blvd and follow straight until you get back to Chaparral Drive.
Left Turn to begin the next lap or to finish!

Please keep in mind that the course will be open to vehicle traffic, and you are to treat this event as any other training ride and be very road wise while on the course. We will have volunteers as well as City of Calgary Police to stop traffic when athletes are approaching, but remember you are responsible for your own safety while out on the course.
No IPODS/MP3 Players allowed.  IPOD/MP3 Player = Automatic disqualification !!

Guidelines

  • Participants may use road or mountain bikes.
  • All bike repairs are done by cyclists only.
  • Portable music players are not permitted.
  • The practice of drafting behind cyclists is illegal.
  • Course Marshals will direct competitors and assist with traffic control.

STANDARD AND SPRINT DISTANCE.

The concept is simple: 1 person swims, 1 person bikes and 1 person runs. The ‘baton’ (timing chip) is passed between each team member in transition. Teams are a great way to take on a triathlon with friends or family.  Same sex, or mixed, race in one category.

750M, 1500M, 3000M

NOTE: the course will be swum in a clockwise direction.

  • The 3km course consists of four (4) laps around the 750m loop. Swimmers keep buoys on their right. Swimmers will exit the water and run over the timing pad on shore to get their finish time. Swimmers will be responsible for counting their own laps.  
  • The 1.5 km course consists of two (2) laps around the orange buoys.  
  • All races will start in waist deep water, just south of the docks.

  • The starting area is very wide and you will seed yourself according to your swimming ability. 
  • It’s hard to predict the water temperature on race day, but it has hovered within a few degrees of 19 Celsius recently. The temperature will vary throughout the course as well. We will provide the water temperature to swimmers that morning.
  • It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you allow time in the morning for a proper warm-up IN THE WATER. This greatly reduces the occurrence of panic and shock in the water and will help you have a successful swim.
  • If you anticipate a longer swim time, or are bothered by cooler temperatures, it is suggested that you wear two swim caps (a neoprene cap under your race cap provides the best insulation, but a silicone one will help as well).
  • If at any time during the swim you think you may require aid, stop and raise your arm to get the attention of the swim course safety team. You may hang on to one of the support boats if you need to. You will NOT be disqualified as long as the boat doesn’t provide propulsion. The boat staff will let you know if they intend to move you off the course. 
  • If you wish to stop racing at any point throughout the event, please be sure to notify an official. It becomes a safety concern if you do not, as our safety teams will be looking for you on the course.

REMINDERS:

  • When arriving for checkin, please be aware that the adults will be racing!  Keep your heads up at all times when accessing the site.
  • One parent can help one child in transition for those ages 7&Under.
  • Floatation devices are allowed for age 7&Under and 8-9. 
  • Parents are able to assist in the water, but note – the water is deep and you must assist other children in the water as well

Once you rack your bike, you will need to run to the ‘run out’ chute to complete your time.  You have the option to complete a short run from transition to the finish line, but event is officially complete when you exit the run chute.

CHARITY & FUNDRAISING

Pay a reduced entry fee and fundraise a minimum of $500 for our Charity of Choice!  Their team will be with you every stop of the way with resources, advice and motivation!

HOW THIS WORKS

1. Register and pay a discounted entry fee to secure your spot!

    If you do not meet the minimum 24hrs prior to race-day, you will be charged the difference to be able to participate in the event.

 

The Calgary Canoe Club is a non for profit sport organization. Triathlon volunteers are members of CCC's youth based sprint canoe kayak program. Our mandate is to provide high quality coaching for paddlers at all levels of development from introduction to high performance. Fundraising will be directed to supporting athletes with travel expenses to compete at the National Championships regatta as well as support our equipment fundraiser to purchase new sprint racing boats. https://calgarycanoeclub.com/

ADDITIONAL NOTES

The wetsuit ruling will be called on race morning as to the temperature of the water, as to whether you will be allowed to wear a wetsuit in the Standard and Sprint distance event ONLY 

IF THE WATER TEMPERATURE IS LESS THAN 16, WETSUITS WILL BE MANDATORY

THE SWIM WILL BE CANCELLED IF WATER TEMPERATURE IS LESS THAN 12 DEGREES.*

IF THE WATER TEMPERATURE IS OVER 22 DEGREES, WETSUITS ARE NOT ALLOWED FOR AGES UNDER 60.  AGE 60+ WETSUITS ARE NOT ALLOWED WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE ABOVE 24.6ºC

Tri it Distance athletes will be invited to wear wetsuits if they wish.

*If the swim is cancelled, a duathlon (run – bike – run) will be hosted.

The Lakek Chaparral Triathlon has the following cutoff times as dictated by Triathlon Alberta

SWIM

Tri it – 20 min,   Sprint – 30 minutes,   Standard – 1 hour 10 minutes

BIKE

This is based on road traffic patterns.   The roadways are heavily congested by 10:30am.

Any cyclist remaining on course at this time will be asked how many laps they have remaining. All riders on their last lap will be allowed to complete the cycle component BUT have to follow the ‘rules of the road’.

Any rider with multiple laps remaining will be pulled from the course but be able to complete the run.

Results will be posted with a DQ

In addition to the rules below, the ITU Competition Rules will be in effect at the race.

SWIM

  • All athletes must wear the swim cap provided.
  • The wetsuit ruling will be called on Sunday morning as to the temperature of the water, as to whether you will be allowed to wear a wetsuit in the Standard and Sprint distance event ONLY (the water must be less than 22 degrees C). Tri it Distance athletes will be invited to wear wetsuits if they wish.
  • Lifeguards will patrol the water should you require assistance. Please wave your hand to receive assistance

BIKE

  • Helmets which are CSA/ANSI/SNELL approved (essentially any helmet sold in sporting stores) must be worn during the cycle portion of the race.
  • You must have your chin strap done up prior to taking your bike from the bike racks.
  • No ear pods are allowed
  • Upon completion of the cycle portion of the race, do not release your chinstrap until you have returned your bike to your numbered rack.
  • Riding your bike in the transition area is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
  • Police and volunteers will be monitoring all major intersections – please follow their instructions as you cross.
  • Roaming vehicles will be staffed with first aid personnel in case of an emergency; a trail vehicle will be available for anyone who cannot complete the course due to mechanical problems.
  • Drafting is NOT permitted (10 meters long by 1 meter wide) and will be monitored by officials. A maximum of 20 seconds will be allowed to pass through the zone of another competitor.
  • When passing be sure to let other athlete know by stating clearly/loudly ‘passing to your LEFT’!

RUN

  • The run portion is directed throughout the local community – athletes are reminded that roads are not closed to pedestrian traffic.
  • No ear pods are allowed
  • Volunteers will be on hand to marshal the course and signage will indicate turns etc. Watch for chalk/pylons on the roads to indicate corners that you need to turn at as well as directional arrows on the grass to notify you of a turn on the run course.
  • Two aid stations will be set up along the course
  • Please wear your race number on the front of your jersey.
  • Everyone must wear a top that covers the torso on the Run. The top must be zipped up if there is a zipper
  • Volunteers will be patrolling the run course on mountain bikes, to assist you in the case of medical emergency or severe bonking.

RELAY TEAMS

  • Relay teams must consist of two or three members. Competitors are only permitted to compete for one true relay (ex. A swimmer may not compete for more than one team).
  • The exchange spots for the relay teams will be at the allotted bike spot in transition

GENERAL

  • Competitors may not receive assistance at any time during the race. Please avail yourself of the medical personnel if necessary.
  • Athletes must hand in all timing devices to race personnel at the finish line.
  • It is each competitor’s responsibility to know the course and rules prior to the race.
  • Any disqualifications will be posted within sixty minutes of the race. Challenges must be made to Race Officials within 30 minutes of the posting.
  • Athletes only in the transition area
  • Most of all, remember to have fun. Any athletes caught not having fun, will be cheered and clapped enthusiastically!!!!!

BIB & BIKE NUMBER

Your triathlon bib and bike number is your unique identifier.

It must be visible and always worn on the outer layer of your race clothing on race day.

Bib number guidelines:

  • your bib must be fastened with four(4) pins to the front of your outer large of clothing and be visible at all times through the race
  • do not alter, cut or fold your bib in any way
  • your bib is non-transferable and must be worn only by you, the registered participant
  • the sale and/or transfer of your bib is stricly prohibited and will results in disqualification

All participants will receive a finisher’s medal upon completion.

There will be NO AGE GROUP AWARDS

The event is held rain, snow or shine and will not be cancelled except for cases of severe weather or Acts of God (Force Majeure). In the case of severe weather, the Race Director will evaluate conditions and make an appropriate determination regarding initiation, cancellation or continuation of the race in question race morning.  Such determination shall be based on prudent consideration in conjunction with local law enforcement and/or other officials.  Any announcements regarding course changes or race cancellation will be made by the race announcer on race morning before the scheduled start. In the event of inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances, Multisportscanada reserves the right to alter, cancel or eliminate any/all portions of the race, or to make any modification concerning the time, length or nature of the event.

AIR QUALITY POLICY

This policy has been developed by Triathlon Alberta/Triathlon BC and utilized by Multisportscanada to make an appropriate decision when the Field of Play is impacted by low visibility or forest fire smoke.

With a Level of 7 or greater, the event will be cancelled.  We will notify participants 72 hours in advance with the current Air Quality levels, but as conditions can change within hours, a final decision will not be made until the morning of the event.

As we have applied for all permits, purchased all event materials (medals, race gear and related merchandise) and committed all registrations to the event, with no possibility of getting these funds back, no refunds, credits or rollovers will be available.

If the event is cancelled, all event merchandise will be made available.  Each event will have it’s own process and participants will be notified accordingly.

During the event, left lanes (flowing with traffic) will be in use on the following roads:

  • Eastbound Chaparral Dr SE (between Chaparral Blvd & 194 Ave)

  • Eastbound 194 Ave SE (between Walden Gate & Wolf Willow Blvd)

  • Westbound 194 Ave SE (between Wolf Willow Blvd & Chaparral Blvd)

  • Northbound Chaparral Blvd SE (between 194 Ave & Chaparral Dr)

CHARITY AND FUNDRAISING

 

The role of the Wetaskiwin Health Foundation is to:

  • raise funds and enhance health services for residents of Wetaskiwin and surrounding areas
  • raise awareness in the community about health care needs

The Foundation will be celebrating 30 years of fundraising in 2016. Through the community’s support and generosity, the Wetaskiwin Health Foundation has disbursed approximately $2.25 Million over the past 7 years and close to $5.5 Million since 1986.

Every dollar has been strategically invested into leading edge technology and patient care enhancement.
